Course outline
Perfect if you’ve got a keen eye for detail, enjoy woodwork and making things and have a genuine interest in pursuing a career as a carpenter or joiner
You’ll learn:
- How to plan for jobs
- Liaise with suppliers
- Set out timber
- Form timber joints
- Tower scaffolds
- Hang doors
- Fix skirting
- Box in pipework
- Erect roof trusses
- Lay floor boarding
You’ll produce doors, windows and stairwells, design moulds and use industry-standard woodwork machinery.
You can expect practical learning in crafting, assembling and fixing joinery components. You’ll complete paperbased and practical assessments and study health and safety. You’ll have the support of very experienced tutors and learn in dedicated construction workshops. You’ll meet employers and visit projects too.

Entry requirements | You’ll need to have completed a Level 1 vocational qualification in a related field and have gained 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English Language and Maths – one of English Language or Maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C). Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above. For applicants aged 19+, relevant industry experience may be considered. |
Teaching & assessment | You’ll take a multiple choice question paper, undergo a practical assessment, a health and safety test and an external online test. |
Progression | Choose to follow with further study at Level 3 in either Site Carpentry or other construction trade, onto an Apprenticeship at Level 3 or into permanent full time employment. |
