News: Our Digital Media Centre celebrates its 1000th recording!

It was a special occasion for our Digital Media Hub as we celebrated producing our 1000th recording! What better way to mark the moment than a TV style interview with our Principal and CEO Janet Smith who was asked lots of all-important questions by Bonnie and Joseph, two of our Media students who took on presenter roles in front of the camera.

The show, which was filmed, produced, and presented by our first- and second-year media students, is being put together as part of an induction film to inspire our new learners when they join us in September.

One of the newest additions to our City Hub Campus, our Digital Media Hub opened in 2022 and is home to the latest technology and industry standard equipment. With our fully immersive green screen, NDI studio, podcast suite, and state-of-the-art 4K/6K cameras, we are proud to inspire the next generation of media professionals, giving them the hands-on experience, they need to help them become future ready.

We asked our media students what having access to these amazing facilities means to them.

One of my favourite things is the opportunities we get. Whether it’s filming, editing or other practical work, I get to try so many things here. I prefer a hands-on style of learning and since I started last September my confidence has improved so much.

Having these facilities is really helping to open up my future and I can’t wait to be back in September to start my second year. The past year has unlocked so many opportunities for me; I have the chance to be creative, bring my ideas to the table, meet new people, try new things, and get stuck in.

Journalism student Joseph told us how working on practical projects and having access to the Digital Media Hub has helped him on his way to becoming a documentary film maker.

Studying here is really inclusive and we are encouraged to explore all our interests and styles. We’re not tied down to one thing or one style of learning, we get to be really creative. From the practical skills I’ve gained here to the open discussions with our tutors about the different future pathways available to us, whether that’s an apprenticeship or further study such as a university level course here or elsewhere, the opportunity to work in the studios and galleries to get lots of practical experience helps us enhance our CV’s and portfolios. This is something I felt I wouldn’t have got elsewhere, and it has opened up so many options for me.
