Work Experience

Motor Vehice05

Work Experience enables a young person to spend time on an employer’s premises. Among other things, they will be able to observe the workplace, complete tasks under adult supervision and develop the skills and behaviours required in the workplace.

Work Experience is designed to bridge the gap between education and the world of work. It can help young people become aware of jobs they have not previously thought of, help inform career choices, offer a chance to prove themselves to an employer, enable them to develop the relevant occupational skills and help instil the attitudes and behaviours expected at work.

If you would like to offer a work experience placement to one of our students please contact our dedicated Work Experience team on 0115 838 0972 or email

You can read more by downloading the Work Experience Employer Handbook here.

Short testimonials outlining the positive experience employers have had with a student on a work experience placement.

Nottingham Tennis Centre (Nottingham City Council)

It was great to have an additional enthusiastic team member to help support the growing tennis programme. The student integrated in to the team brilliantly and following the placement became a valuable paid member of the team.”

It was great to have Greg be part of the team for 6 months. This really helped him understand the business and its place within the community. Following on from the placement Greg became a valued paid lead coach delivering to over 100 participants weekly. Greg also came up with some fantastic team values that we still use to this day. Greg has used his skills developed with us and progressed in to a full time role within a well-known company.”

“Charlotte joined us to complete work experience and took to working in the hotel like a fish to water. During her few days on our hotel reception and in the restaurant she displayed an outstanding attitude and willingness to learn and on the second day in the restaurant ended up working alongside much more experienced team members and was able to keep up with them. By the end of the week we offered her the opportunity to come and work for us whenever she wanted to and to our delight Charlotte accepted the offer and now is part of the hotel Food and Beverage team. I believe if Charlotte works with the same attitude she will be very successful in whatever industry she chooses to go in”.

Alicia is currently completing a catering qualification at New College Nottingham and as part of this qualification joined us for 1 weeks’ work experience. She came for an initial interview & then for a trial shift at which point we realised that she had true potential for the catering industry. Alicia has been employed within the EMCC kitchen team for approximately 6 weeks now. She has shown a keen interest in all sections of the kitchen & records new skills & recipes she has learnt.

If Alicia continues with this progress she will be a credit to any kitchen brigade & hopefully stay with the EMCC kitchen team & progress up the ladder.

Well done Alicia”.
