Job description

We are recruiting for an Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship to join our successful team, dedicated to delivering a top-notch service. During the apprenticeship, you will become proficient in reading and interpreting CAD drawings, planning your work with the right tools, equipment and resources to complete the task.

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work:

We are recruiting for an Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship to join our successful team, dedicated to delivering a top-notch service. The enthusiastic candidate will be based at our Nottingham site.

During the apprenticeship, you will become proficient in reading and interpreting CAD drawings, planning your work with the right tools, equipment and resources to complete the task. You will develop your problem solving and fault diagnosis skills alongside following the high quality, health and safety standards in place.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Component Production and Assembly: Produce complex high-value, low-volume components or assemblies either in full or part using specialised machines, equipment, or systems as per the required specifications
  • Component Refurbishment: Refurbish components by interpreting drawings or specifications, planning the work, and ensuring they meet quality standards
  • Quality Assurance: Check work against quality standards, make necessary adjustments, and ensure components or assemblies meet required specifications
  • Work Area Preparation: Prepare the work area for subsequent tasks by ensuring equipment meets operational standards
  • Drawing Interpretation: Accurately interpret and follow technical drawings, diagrams, or specifications for component or assembly requirements
  • Work Planning: Plan work activities, including resource allocation, equipment, and tooling requirements
  • Component Manufacture: Produce individual components and refurbish as needed
  • Assembly Operations: Assemble components to create equipment, machines, or systems, either fully or partially
  • Problem-Solving: Identify and resolve issues with components or assemblies, including fault diagnosis
  • Completion and Handover: Hand over completed components or assemblies, including proper storage and commissioning
  • Work Area Maintenance: Reinstate work areas and maintain equipment
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of component production or assembly processes

Vacancy information

Monday to Friday. Typically, Monday - Thursday, 6.30am to 3.30pm, and Friday,6.30am to 11.00am.

Training will be delivered one day per week, term time, and is based at The Highfield site and facilities are in creation to enrich the student experience, developing them with the necessary skills using industry recognised equipment to ensure the apprentice receives training closely matched to the employer’s and industry.

If successful in completing the apprenticeship, there may be an opportunity for the apprentice to remain with SGS as a permanent member of our highly skilled team as a Calibration Engineer. The apprentice may also wish to consider further studies, taking skills, knowledge and experience to the next level. Our past apprentices have all progressed with SGS, now taking on roles such as Laboratory Manager.
