Barbering (Level 2 City & Guilds Certificate) — Full-time

Course outline

This course is perfect if you would like to gain a working knowledge of men’s styling and work towards a career in industry.

You’ll learn a range of skills to set you up for a career in barbering, including initial consultations with clients, shampooing, conditioning and cutting techniques.

You’ll also cover cutting facial hair, as well as how to dry and finish men’s hair.

Optional units could include creating patterns in hair, colouring, or additional important skills such as reception duties and promoting additional services.

Entry requirements

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English and maths – one of English or Maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C).

Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above.

All students must undertake and pass a practical dexterity test prior to enrolment to ensure you are suitable for this course.

If you are a progressing student, you must have achieved 90% attendance and passed a relevant Level 1 course. Please speak to your tutor regarding your progression options.

Teaching & assessment

Continual assessment of practical and written and oral testing of theory.

Progression

Choose to follow with further units at Level 2 to build a full qualification in Hairdressing, or complete an apprenticeship within a salon.

Additional information

You will need to purchase kit and a uniform. Costs for these can be discussed at interview.

Students aged 16-18 do not have to pay tuition fees.
