Course outline

This course is perfect if you have a creative flair and want to develop the skills you need to have a successful career in hairdressing.

You’ll learn cutting, setting, blow-drying, colouring and perming, as well as more complex styling techniques, plus you’ll cover a range of units in customer service, health and safety, and hairdressing theory.

You will develop your communications skills, and learn how to give an effective hair consultation and how to operate professionally in a salon environment.

You can expect hands-on learning to ensure you perfect your hair skills on mannequin and live models, plus you’ll work with great products such as the Wella professional range in great facilities.

You’ll complete a range of practical observations, assignments, portfolios and theory-based tests. Gaining valuable work experience will also be part of your course.

Entry requirements

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English Language and Maths – one of English Language or Maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C). Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above.


You’ll complete a range of practical observations, assignments, portfolios and theory-based tests.


Choose to follow with further study on a Level 3 Hairdressing programme. You could also move into an apprenticeship role within a salon or take the barbering route.

Additional information

You will need to buy a kit and uniform. Kit and uniform costs are to be confirmed and will be discussed at interview.
