This course is perfect if:
- You’re interested in textiles, fabric manipulation, and sewing and want to explore your creativity in a practical, hands-on way.
- You enjoy working with materials and want to learn basic textile techniques such as stitching, applique, fabric printing, or embellishment.
- You're a beginner or returning learner looking for a gentle introduction to textile craft with no prior experience needed.
- You’re a school or college student wanting to build a creative portfolio for progression into fashion, art, or design-related courses.
- You want to explore a potential career in the fashion, costume, or textiles industries by starting with essential craft skills.
- You’re looking for a flexible, creative course that encourages self-expression and experimentation through textile-based projects.
- You want to gain a recognised qualification that shows your ability to plan, produce, and evaluate textile work with purpose and creativity.
On this course, you will develop a range of foundational skills in textile craft. Through practical, hands-on projects, you’ll explore different materials, tools, and techniques used in the creative textile industry.
- Plan and design a textile project - Develop ideas and create simple plans for textile-based outcomes, such as a cushion, tote bag, or wall hanging.
- Use textile techniques safely and effectively - Learn basic methods such as hand stitching, machine sewing, fabric painting, applique, patchwork, or embellishment (e.g. beads, sequins).
- Select and use appropriate tools and materials - Gain confidence in choosing fabrics, threads, and tools suited to your design, while using them safely in a workshop or classroom environment.
- Work with creativity and care - Explore your personal style and experiment with colours, textures, and patterns in your projects.
- Evaluate your own work - Reflect on your creative process and final product, identifying what worked well and what you could improve.
By the end of the course, you’ll have:
- A completed textile piece that you’ve designed and made yourself
- A better understanding of how to work creatively and safely in a craft setting
- A nationally recognised qualification to support your next steps in education, training, or employment in the creative industries
As a student on this course, you can expect a supportive and creative learning environment where your ideas are encouraged, and your confidence grows with each project.
- Creative, hands-on learning - Most of your time will be spent making – experimenting with fabrics, colours, textures, and techniques to bring your designs to life.
- Step-by-step guidance - You’ll be supported by your tutor throughout the course as you learn to plan, develop, and complete your own textile project.
- Beginner-friendly activities - No prior experience needed – the course is designed for learners of all levels, including those completely new to sewing or textile work.
- Access to materials and tools - You’ll work with a range of fabrics, threads, and tools, learning how to use them safely and creatively.
- A relaxed, inclusive atmosphere - Whether you're learning in a classroom, workshop, or community space, you’ll be part of a group where ideas are shared and individual styles are celebrated.
- A finished textile piece to be proud of - By the end of the course, you’ll have created a personal piece of textile craft and built practical skills to use in future creative work.
- A recognised qualification - Successful completion of the course will earn you an NCFE Level 1 Award – a great addition to your portfolio or CV.
