Apprenticeship introduction

The Level 2 Engineering and Manufacturing Apprenticeship is an entry level programme designed for people who are aged between 16-21 at the very start of their engineering career. It provides the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to build a strong foundation for progression into more specialised technical roles within the engineering and manufacturing industry.

This apprenticeship is ideal for those with little or no prior experience, offering the opportunity to earn while learning in a real working environment. Apprentices will gain confidence working with tools, equipment, and engineering processes while developing the essential employability skills valued by employers.

You will learn

1. Core Technical Knowledge

You will develop an understanding of fundamental engineering principles, including:

  • Basic engineering mathematics and measurements
  • Materials, their properties, and how they are used
  • Manufacturing processes (e.g., forming, cutting, machining, assembly)
  • Engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Quality control and inspection methods

This theoretical knowledge gives apprentices the grounding needed to progress into advanced technical training.

2. Practical Hands On Skills

Through workshop training and on the job experience, you will learn how to:

  • Safely use hand tools and power tools
  • Operate basic engineering equipment and machinery
  • Produce components or assemblies following set specifications
  • Carry out routine inspections, measurements, and quality checks
  • Follow standard operating procedures and workplace instructions

These skills build confidence in practical engineering tasks and prepare learners for more complex manufacturing activities at higher levels.

3. Behaviours and Professional Development

The apprenticeship also focuses on developing behaviours required for success in engineering roles, such as:

  • Working safely and responsibly
  • Paying attention to detail
  • Communicating effectively with colleagues and supervisors
  • Problem solving and thinking logically
  • Working as part of a team
  • Taking ownership of learning and development

These behaviours form the foundation of a strong engineering mindset.

Apprenticeship information

  • Typical duration: 15 months (including EPA)
  • Minimum 20% off-the-job training (in line with apprenticeship funding rules)

EAL Level 2 Certificate in Engineering Operations Knowledge

  • GCSE Maths and English at Grade 3 or above (or equivalent)
  • Employed in a relevant engineering role (minimum 30 hours per week)
  • Apprentices must be aged between 16-21 or young adults aged 22 to 24 if they hold an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), are a care leaver, or are a prisoner or prison leaver.
  • All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.

End Point Assessment (EPA)

The EPA is conducted by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation and typically includes:

  • Practical observation
  • Professional discussion
  • Review of portfolio evidence

Assessment components may vary slightly depending on the current assessment plan version.

Upon achievement, you may wish to progress on to a level 3 within the specialism.
