Course outline

This course is perfect if you want learn about the world of online technology.

Units covered include:

Unit 1 – The Online World

This unit will help you understand the main technologies and processes behind the internet and investigate how they come together to let you view websites and send information across the world. You will explore a range of digital devices, such as smart phones and consider the technology that enables these devices to share and exchange information

This technology has created new concerns regarding security and privacy. You will investigate these concerns and consider how users should behave online to safeguard themselves and respect others

Online systems and technology have become part of everyday work, so being able to understand and work with this technology is essential in many roles within this industry. In this unit you will:

  • Investigate online services and online communication.
  • Investigate components of the internet and how digital devices exchange and store information.
  • Investigate issues with operating online.

Unit 2 – Technology Systems

Technology systems are involved in many of the objects we use every day, from a laptop computer and routers relaying internet traffic, to logging in to a social networking site. This unit provides a first look at how the main building blocks of technology systems work.

No technology system is complete without the software that brings it to life. You will explore different types of software. These will include the operating system (OS) that supports the communication and management of resources, and utility programs that provide functionality to maintain the system.

You will also learn about the role of applications software, such as office programs, graphics packages, accounting software and CAD/CAM, that supports many aspects of everyday business life.

In this unit you will:

  • Understand how the components of technology systems work together
  • Understand how data flows between internal components of a computer and is processed to provide information
  • Understand different types of software.

Unit 3 – Digital Portfolio

This unit is your chance to show off! A digital portfolio is an exciting onscreen way to showcase your achievements to potential employers or when applying for a course. It is all about:

  • The projects you have created and developed
  • Your use of communication and presentation skills
  • Your capabilities and potential

Digital portfolios can be viewed by anyone with a computer and an internet browser. You will learn how to create a digital portfolio that includes a series of web pages with links to content that you have created. You will learn how to make use of multimedia assets such as images, sound and video to make your portfolio appealing and engaging.

In this unit you will:

  • Design a digital portfolio
  • Create and test a digital portfolio
  • Review the digital portfolio.

These mandatory units are complimented with a selection of other units to make up the entire course. The other units range from technical to design subjects, such as:

  • Database design
  • Spreadsheets
  • Digital Graphics
  • Multimedia design
  • Digital Audio
  • Website development
  • Software development

Entry requirements

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3, including English Language and Maths – one of English Language or Maths must be grade 9–4. Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 or above.

Teaching & assessment

You will be assessed through coursework and examinations except for GCSEs/Functional Skills where applicable.
