Course introduction

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

This course is perfect for anyone who loves art, fashion, and making things with their hands. You’ll get to explore fabrics in new and exciting ways, turning ordinary materials into creative, eye-catching designs. It’s not just about learning techniques—it’s about experimenting boldly, and discovering your own creative style.

You will explore creative and exciting ways to design the look and texture of fabrics using art, hands-on experiments, and innovative surface design techniques. You will also paint, print, stitch, layer, and transform materials to create unique fabrics inspired by fashion and art.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a mini collection of unique fabric surfaces, a showcase of your work to share with friends and family, and the confidence to continue creating and experimenting with your own designs. Whether you dream of designing clothes, accessories, or just love making cool fabrics, this course gives you the tools, inspiration, and freedom to bring your ideas to life!

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.

For more information on using Microsoft Teams and the induction process, please visit our Induction Information for Community Students page.
