Course introduction

It is no longer possible to apply/enrol for this course as there are no course dates available. Please check back later as we may be offering it again in the future.

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning and/or employment (paid or voluntary)

This 10-week beginner-level course will introduce you to the fundamental skills and techniques of patchwork and quilting. You will learn how to safely use essential tools, cut and piece fabric accurately, and construct basic quilt blocks such as the Nine Patch and Log Cabin. The course covers fabric selection, colour coordination, pressing techniques, and an introduction to quilting by hand or machine. You will complete a small quilted project, such as a table runner, pillow, or wall hanging, by the end of the course.

During the course, you will learn to

  • Identify and correctly use essential patchwork and quilting tools (rotary cutter, mat, ruler, iron, sewing machine, needles)
  • Accurately cut fabric pieces and maintain a consistent ¼-inch seam allowance
  • Apply basic design principles including colour coordination, pattern repetition, and fabric selection
  • Layer, baste, and quilt a small project (e.g., mini quilt or cushion cover) using simple straight-line quilting
  • Use applique as a method of surface design
  • Apply binding to finish the edges of the project

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.

For more information on using Microsoft Teams and the induction process, please visit our Induction Information for Community Students page.
