News: Our Zero’ Campaign launched 1 year ago: here’s what we’ve done so far!

Earth Day 2024, Planet vs Plastics
Earth Day Social Graphic

Last year, to celebrate Earth Day, we started our #journeytoZERO to help contribute to Nottingham’s efforts to become the first carbon neutral city. As a large employer, occupying a sizeable estate, we must set an example for responsible environmental management, and we have a duty to raise environmental awareness among our staff and learners. This is why our staff and students have been involved in, educated about, and started their own sustainability initiatives over the past year.

Victoria Centre pop-up event

Our fashion students, across different levels, recently held a pop-up event based around sustainability in the Victoria Centre.

Students created an immersive experience using AI technologies, featuring a VR headset catwalk experience to showcase their work. They also used sustainable inks, chemical free dyes and upcycled and recycled products when making their garments.

This project was in collaboration with It’s In Nottingham”, who acquired a unit in the Victoria Centre for students to use. As part of a sustainability effort, they reached out to local businesses to repurpose desks and equipment for use in displays through recycling and reusing.

Sustainability CPD day

Staff also recently took part in a Sustainability themed CPD at our City Hub campus, which featured internal and external guest speakers, information stalls and activities such as book swaps, soup making and recycled book mark making.

The opportunity allowed staff personal development and ways to learn about sustainability in their own homes and at work.

Sustainability event at the Nottingham Contemporary

Our Level 3 Business students put their questions to a panel of representatives from Cartwright Communications, Conspare: Concrete Production Company, CPMG Architects and Efficiency North, who all spoke about the importance of sustainability and their ESG initiatives.

The event marked the beginning of a 6 week project where students got the chance to apply their skills on a live-brief, which included a Dragon’s Den” style pitch to a panel of business representatives.

Green Planting at our campuses

Staff and students at our High Pavement Sixth Form took part in a planting project with Grow Notts to create a green space for students to enjoy.

The space has been created behind the campus to give students an outdoor space to spend their breaks in and introduce more wildlife to the area.

Last Summer staff and students also took part in a wildflower planting session by our City Hub campus. This was also in collaboration with Grow Notts, who came in to deliver a talk to our students about how the planting will benefit the area, bringing in various insects and pollinators such as bees.

Basford Tree Planting

CEO Principal Janet Smith, and Nottingham North MP Alex Norris at tree planting with students

Last year as part of the launch of our Zero’ campaign, our CEO Principal Janet Smith, and Nottingham North MP Alex Norris, planted our 400th tree at our Basford campus.

This was a milestone in our tree planting program, where we planted trees and shrubs across the Basford land to create ideal wildlife habitats and enhance the overall greenscape for staff, students and the wider community.

Upcoming events!

Earth Day 2024 celebrations

To Celebrate Earth Day 2024 students are holding a Climate Seminar and will be able to visit information stalls from internal and external staff to learn about sustainability.

Student litter picking charity walk

This May, students have planned a Litter Picking walk for one of their Social Action projects. The walk will start at the Canal by our City Hub campus and end at the Attenborough Nature Reserve, with the rubbish being dropped off at the Beeston recycling Centre afterwards.

The walk is in aid of Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People in Loughborough, as it has close ties with one of our students.
