FdA Fashion Foundation Degree (Level 5) — Full-time

Course outline

This course provides a practical hands-on degree in fashion with strong links to the fashion industry.

Situated right in the heart of Nottingham’s Creative Quarter this course has some fantastic links with the industry including Paul Smith, Godfrey Sports, The Trend Boutique, Speedo and Quantum Clothing to name a few.

The course focuses on the design process from forecasting and concept development to design, creative pattern cutting and manufacture, together with the visual communication of ideas and technical information to industry standard.

You will undertake a wide range of live projects and competitions which will help you to develop and realise your creative potential and experience realistic work relevant to the fashion industry. You will attend exhibitions and seminars and may have the opportunity to research the international fashion market during a European study trip.

An additional studies fee (approx £80–100) is charged to cover studies, consumables and study trip contributions.

Year 1 modules include:

  • Design process and realisation
  • Fashion product and brand development (including realisation)
  • Visual communication techniques for fashion
  • Fashion in context

Year 2 modules include:

  • Fashion forecasting and design (including realisation)
  • Critical issues in fashion
  • Professional development
  • Final major project (three options of either catwalk, product or trend forecasting)

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 48 UCAS points from:

  • At least two A Levels at A2
  • BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Access to HE Diploma

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff. For creative courses you would usually need a qualification in a relevant subject area.

We would expect students to be working at (or to demonstrate competency at) Level 2 or above in English/literacy and maths/numeracy.

You will be invited to attend an interview and will be asked to submit an e-portfolio or written assignment.

Experienced mature applicants with relevant professional experience and/or qualifications are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Your work will be assessed on a continuous basis.

Progression

You can progress on to our one-year BA (Hons) Art and Design Top-up Degree, or you may wish to progress to an alternative top-up course or the second or third year of a specialised degree course.

Alternatively, you could start your career in the fashion and clothing industries or related areas.

Many of our students have progressed into employment with some of the world’s biggest fashion brands or set up their own business.
