Course introduction

This course is perfect if you want to develop your skills and knowledge of Interior Design.

If you’re looking to expand your design skills, our Interior Design course offers something for everyone. Led by an expert design tutor, this this short course will give you the opportunity to both learn and develop the principles of design and will lead to the development of a portfolio of drawing work.

Term 1 - Residential Interior Design (Beginners)

This course is designed for those who want to learn some basic elements of interior design. Whether you want to see if it is a subject you want to study further or whether you just want to gain some confidence in designing your home, this short course looks at the different elements of residential interior design with a mini project integrated throughout the 8 sessions.

You will look at how to approach a client brief, as well as starting to develop a concept in response to this. You will cover colour theory for Interior Design and how colour schemes can be used to impact a space. Materials and their application, technical drawing skills, planning a space as well as lighting and technology will be covered over the next 4 weeks.

Finishing off you will explore how to put together a basic spec and how building work would be scheduled post your design. Finishing off, you will put together a presentation of your realised work to bring to life your initial concept.

Term 2 - Commercial Interior Design (Intermediate)

Throughout the duration of this course you will look at brand analysis and how to include a brand in the customer experience. You will gather information for a client brief and generate ideas to form a concept.

Working on your own or a live brief, you will look at site analysis and existing spaces, learn about the importance of colour, graphics and wayfinding in your designs, explore how to create technical drawings to scale as well as delving into lighting and furniture design and visual merchandising.

You will focus on completing a final client presentation board of the skills you’ve learnt through the duration of the course as an outcome.

You will receive an induction to our well-resourced Art and Design Department, excellent tutor teaching, new knowledge and skills, and opportunities to develop your creativity.

Basic materials and media will be provided on the course. If you want to develop your work further, you can purchase art materials at our Art Shop based at 25 Stoney Street.

Please note: Due to the high demand of these part time courses, if you start a course but can no longer carry on, you will not be eligible for a full course refund. If you enrol on a course and the start date passes, you will not be eligible for a course material fee refund. If you get remitted fees and attend your course for free, if you do not attend the first two sessions without letting the tutor know or without valid reason, you will be withdrawn from the course. Many thanks for your understanding.
