Course introduction

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

This course is ideal if you already have basic patchwork and quilting experience and would like to develop your skills further. It is suitable for learners who can confidently use a sewing machine and are ready to tackle more challenging techniques, improve the accuracy of their work and create more polished, professional-looking projects. Whether you quilt for relaxation, personal enjoyment or hope to progress towards selling your work, this course offers the opportunity to expand your creativity in a friendly and supportive environment.

During this course you will build on your existing patchwork and quilting knowledge by exploring intermediate piecing techniques, colour planning, fabric selection, decorative quilting and professional finishing methods. You will create a variety of practical projects while improving your precision, confidence and creative design skills. As the course progresses, you will plan and complete your own individual quilted project, demonstrating the techniques you have developed throughout the programme.

You can expect hands-on sessions with step-by-step demonstrations, practical guidance and plenty of time to develop your skills. Each week you are expected to bring your own fabrics where the tutor offers opportunities to learn new techniques, experiment with fabrics and quilting designs, receive individual tutor support and share ideas with fellow learners. By the end of the course, you will have completed several high-quality quilted projects and gained the confidence to continue developing your patchwork and quilting skills independently.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.

For more information on using Microsoft Teams and the induction process, please visit our Induction Information for Community Students page.
