Course introduction

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

This course is perfect if you have always wanted to learn hand embroidery but don't know where to begin. Whether you're looking for a new creative hobby, through stitching, or are keen to develop practical textile skills, this course offers a supportive and enjoyable introduction.

Throughout this course, you will learn the essential techniques needed to begin your hand embroidery journey with confidence. Starting with the basics, you'll become familiar with embroidery tools, fabrics, threads and hoops, before exploring a range of traditional and decorative stitches. You'll discover how to transfer designs onto fabric, combine colours and textures, using a variety of stitching techniques. You will learn new and familiar stitches that are both left-handed and right-handed friendly. You will be shown how to create decorative pieces with stitches learnt.

Each session will include tutor demonstrations, step-by-step guidance, practical stitching activities and plenty of opportunities to ask questions and receive individual support. The course is designed to be hands-on allowing you to learn through practice while building confidence week by week. You'll have the chance to experiment with different stitches, threads and design ideas, share inspiration with fellow learners, and create a collection of samples and finished pieces to take home. By the end of the course, you'll have gained new creative skills, increased confidence in hand embroidery, and the knowledge needed to continue stitching independently.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.
