Course introduction
Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).
This course is perfect if you have some experience of hand embroidery and would like to develop your skills further through more challenging techniques and creative projects. It is ideal if you want to build confidence with a wider range of stitches, experiment with colour and texture, and explore your own creative style. Whether you enjoy embroidery as a relaxing hobby, want to create unique handmade gifts, or are interested in developing your skills towards selling your work or starting a small creative enterprise, this course will help you refine your techniques and produce beautiful, personalised textile pieces.
You will learn how to develop your hand embroidery skills by exploring a wider range of decorative stitches, advanced techniques and creative applications. You will experiment with different fabrics, threads, colours and textures to create unique embroidered designs, while developing confidence in planning and creating your own projects. You will learn how to combine techniques such as surface embroidery, appliqué, embellishment and contemporary stitching methods to produce professional-looking textile pieces. You will also develop your ability to select suitable materials, improve your finishing techniques, evaluate your work and explore how your embroidery skills can be used for personal projects, gifts or creative enterprise opportunities..
You are expected to bring your own threads and fabric each session where you can develop your embroidery skills at your own pace while gaining confidence and inspiration from others. Through demonstrations, guided practice and individual support, you will explore new techniques, experiment with different materials and create a range of beautiful, embroidered projects. You can expect to build on your existing skills, try new creative approaches, share ideas with fellow learners and complete personalised textile pieces that reflect your own style and imagination. This course offers the opportunity to relax, be creative and develop practical skills that can be enjoyed as a hobby, used for handmade gifts or taken further towards a creative enterprise.
You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.
You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.
