The Highway Electrical Maintenance and Installation Operative Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to develop the practical skills and technical knowledge needed to install, maintain and repair a wide range of highway electrical equipment. From street lighting and illuminated traffic signs to electric vehicle charging points and intelligent transport systems, apprentices play a vital role in supporting modern transport networks and local communities.
Throughout the programme, you'll gain hands-on experience working alongside industry professionals while learning about electrical installation, fault diagnosis, planned maintenance, health and safety, and industry regulations. You'll develop the confidence to work safely in outdoor environments and contribute to projects that improve public safety and infrastructure across the region.
On successful completion, you'll have the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to progress in the highway electrical sector, opening doors to a range of specialist roles within installation, maintenance and infrastructure services.

Highway Electrical Maintenance and Installation Operative Apprenticeship
You will need a GCSE Grade D/ 3 or Level 1 Functional Skills English and Maths. Some employers may require additional qualifications depending on the role
You also will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.
Adults who are aged 19+ with appropriate industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.
All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.
You will develop an electronic portfolio of evidence against the requirements of the qualification. Evidence can be generated by observation of your workplace, witness testimonies, case studies or personal accounts of events. Online tests may be used to confirm your knowledge and understanding as well as an End Point Assessment.
You can progress to a Level 3 highways electrician or service operative course or apprenticeship.
