This course is perfect for adults aged 19 and over who are curious about careers in the defence or security sector and want a supportive, accessible starting point. It's ideal for learners who want to build confidence, develop teamwork and digital skills and explore vocational pathways without needing prior qualifications. It also suits anyone interested in gaining essential defence and cybersecurity knowledge to support progression into further study, training or entry level roles.
Learners will explore the defence sector, develop essential teamwork and goal setting skills and gain confidence through personal and social development activities. They will investigate real vocational pathways, understand what working in defence involves and prepare for their next steps in education or employment. Alongside this, they will build foundational cybersecurity knowledge including cybercrime awareness, protective digital practises and the legal and ethical standards that underpin modern security and defence work.
Course information
8 weeks, one evening class per week, Wednesday evenings, 5pm-8pm.
- NCFE Level 1 Award in Personal and Social Development
- Gateway Level 1 Award in Cybersecurity

You will create a portfolio of evidence with the help of the tutor.
You could progress to:
- Employment (for example, admin roles, assistant roles, support worker roles, armed forces recruitment)
- Further study such as higher level or study or apprenticeships.
Many defence and cyber employers offer apprenticeships, which accessible entry routes.
Cybersecurity entry roles typically start with IT support, then progress into specialist areas.
Defence roles value teamwork, communication, discipline, digital awareness and problem-solving, all of which this course helps develop.
