This course is perfect if you are wanting to begin your own sewing business or simply learn a new hobby!

The Introduction to Sewing Techniques pathway includes the following courses:

  • Introduction to Using a Domestic Sewing Machine
    • This course is perfect if you have never used a domestic sewing machine or have your own and want practical support with how to use it! If you have used a domestic sewing machine and would like a refresher, troubleshooting tips or demonstrations that you can practice, we would love to see you there!
  • Introduction to Pattern Cutting
    • This course  covers essential topics such as understanding body measurements, drafting basic blocks, and manipulating patterns to achieve various styles and fits. You will learn how to translate design ideas into flat patterns, which can then be used to cut fabric and construct garments.
  • Introduction to Sewing Woven Fabrics
    • This course is perfect if you are looking to develop technical skills in sewing woven fabrics from scratch. Our technical tutors will demonstrate and show you the key characteristics of fabrics to look out for when sewing and what precautions you need to take. You will be shown a range of machinery that can be used with woven fabrics including domestic and industrial sewing machines, overlockers, binding machine and twin-needle machinery.
  • Introduction to Sewing Jersey Fabrics
    • This course is perfect if you are looking to develop technical skills in sewing jersey fabrics from scratch. Our technical tutors will demonstrate and show you the key characteristics of fabrics to look out for when sewing and what precautions you need to take. You will be shown a range of machinery that can be used with jersey fabrics including overlockers, hemming and twin-needle machinery.

You will develop a range of samples and technical notes from these workshops and demonstrations which you can refer to in your own practice.

Our other pathways include Creative Business Start-Up, Creative Entrepreneurs and Advanced Fashion.

Please note: Due to the high demand of these part time courses, if you start a course but can no longer carry on, you will not be eligible for a full course refund. If you enrol on a course and the start date passes, you will not be eligible for a course material fee refund. If you get remitted fees and attend your course for free, if you do not attend the first two sessions without letting the tutor know or without valid reason, you will be withdrawn from the course. You will receive verbal feedback throughout the course.

You can progress to other sewing courses at Nottingham College (see course content above).
