Course outline
This course is perfect if you already have some painting and decorating skills and are looking to take your learning to another level.
You’ll learn about:
- Preparing and sanding surfaces for paint
- The different coverings for walls and ceilings
- Applying primers
- Paint spraying
- Decorative finishes
You’ll learn about the various different trades and how they all come together on a project and about understanding the needs of your customers.
You can expect to get lots of practical learning using all of the main tools and materials of the trade. You’ll also get to complete lots of practical assessments to test your skills, all with the support of your experienced tutors.

Entry requirements | You’ll need to have completed a Level 1 vocational qualification in a related field and have gained 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English Language and Maths – one of English Language or Maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C). Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above. For applicants aged 19+, relevant industry experience may be considered. |
Teaching & assessment | Assessment will include a multiple choice paper, a practical assessment and an external online test. |
Progression | Choose to follow with an Apprenticeship in painting or decorating or full time permanent employment. You could also go it alone as a self-employed painter and decorator. |
