Course introduction

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

If you’ve completed the beginners course or are just ready to move beyond the basics, then this course is for you. It will help you to build confidence with your existing blocks. We’ll keep it simple and focus on two to three easy pattern changes you can use.  You’ll get support every step and work at your own pace. You’ll make calico toiles to test fit each item; the focus is on pattern skills.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Use basic blocks to draft two simple variations.
  • Move and change darts to create new shapes.
  • Add simple details, patch pockets, basic collar, and sleeve length changes.
  • Take accurate measurements and adjust patterns for a better fit.
  • Make a toile in calico to test fit and make small changes.
  • Understand seam allowance and pattern markings for home sewing.
  • Present finished patterns clearly labelled ready to use.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.

For more information on using Microsoft Teams and the induction process, please visit our Induction Information for Community Students page.
