This course is ideal for learners who are new to using commercial sewing patterns. The course introduces the basic skills needed to choose, read and follow a simple pattern. Learners will build confidence step‑by‑step while working on an easy garment or accessories project with tutor guidance. No previous experience with patterns is needed.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the basic parts of a commercial pattern envelope.
  • Identify measurements and choose the correct size for a beginner‑friendly project.
  • Recognise common pattern symbols and simple layout diagrams.
  • Prepare and cut pattern pieces accurately with tutor support.
  • Place pattern pieces on fabric correctly following grainlines and layout guides.
  • Follow simple pattern instructions step‑by‑step.
  • Assemble a basic garment or item using beginner sewing techniques.
  • Gain confidence in using patterns independently.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.
