Course introduction

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

This course is suitable for learners who already feel comfortable using a sewing machine and want to build further skills while focusing on sustainable sewing, repair and upcycling.

The Improvers course introduces more detailed techniques, encourages creative reuse of textiles, and supports learners in working more independently on slightly more complex upcycling and alteration projects.

Learners may work on projects such as repairing garments more accurately, reshaping old clothes, creating new items from fabric scraps, or upcycling shirts, jeans or home textiles.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Sew with improved accuracy, producing neater seams and more confident stitching.
  • Work with a wider range of second-hand or reclaimed fabrics, including slightly more challenging materials.
  • Carry out more detailed repairs, such as patching larger holes, reinforcing worn areas, or repairing seams with better techniques.
  • Upcycle garments, such as turning shirts into bags, reshaping tops, using leftover fabric scraps creatively, or combining materials.
  • Adjust or reshape simple garments, such as taking in side seams, altering hems or refreshing older clothing.
  • Create more complex sustainable projects, such as organisers, zip pouches made from reused textiles, or small home decor items.
  • Understand how to reduce waste, including reusing offcuts, repairing items instead of discarding them, and choosing sustainable materials.
  • Work more independently, planning simple upcycling or repair projects with tutor support.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.

For more information on using Microsoft Teams and the induction process, please visit our Induction Information for Community Students page.
