Nottingham College is proud to highlight its partnership with Tara Group, whose recent donation of surplus building materials is helping to enhance the learning experience for bricklaying apprentices.

delivery of bricks to Ruddington

The materials were delivered to the College’s Ruddington brick workshop, where they are now being used by Year 1 and Year 2 apprentices to develop their practical skills using real, industry-standard resources.

Having access to a variety of bricks has given students the opportunity to better understand how different materials behave when laid. Variations in colour, texture and finish allow apprentices to explore how mortar application and jointing techniques can significantly affect the overall appearance and quality of a wall.  This hands-on experience helps build the attention to detail required in the construction industry.

Working with industry-standard materials is essential in preparing students for both their end-point assessment (EPA) and future employment.

The initiative is also supporting apprentices at our Ruddington campus, ensuring those already on employer-linked pathways benefit from practical, relevant experience that reflects real working environments.

This partnership also highlights the value of strong collaboration between education providers and industry. Support from employers like Tara Group plays a vital role in helping colleges deliver meaningful, career-focused learning. By contributing materials and resources, employers are directly supporting the development of future talent within the construction sector.

Through partnerships like this, students gain the experience and confidence needed to progress into the workplace, while employers benefit from a pipeline of skilled, work-ready apprentices. Without exposure to the correct tools and materials, students would not be able to meet the required assessment criteria or develop the skills expected by employers.
