Art and technology came together in a striking display of creativity at Nottingham Castle, where BA Art & Design students from Nottingham College showcased their work in the Jelly & Lace exhibition. The event featured an impressive mix of photography, ceramics, installations, and performance art, all inspired by the rich history and visual beauty of the Castle’s galleries and grounds.

One of the standout features of the exhibition was an interactive virtual reality (VR) experience, which gave visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the artwork and explore it from entirely new perspectives. This innovative use of digital technology marks a significant step forward for Nottingham College, bridging the gap between traditional art forms and modern digital tools.

The VR experience incorporated augmented reality elements to create a fully immersive environment, helping visitors engage more deeply with the artworks. It not only highlighted the forward-thinking approach of the students but also reflected the evolving relationship between art and technology.

Accessibility was a key focus in the design of the VR experience. Created using ThingLink software, it was developed to be inclusive for visitors of all ages and abilities. The interactive features encouraged exploration and made the exhibition more approachable and enjoyable for everyone.

Kate Whyles, Digital Innovation and Development Coach at Nottingham College, described the experience as a lasting interpretation of the exhibition. It’s designed to inspire future students to pursue their artistic ambitions and embrace the exciting possibilities offered by digital innovation in the arts.

The impact of the project has extended beyond the exhibition itself. The curators at Nottingham Castle were so impressed by the VR experience that they plan to feature it permanently on their website, ensuring that the students’ work continues to reach and inspire new audiences.
