Some of our automotive and engineering students are putting their skills to the test this weekend, teaming up with mental health charity Base 51 to take part in Nottingham’s first ever Super Soapbox Challenge on Sunday 10th May.
With more than 35 teams competing, this free community event, brought to you by It’s in Nottingham, will see gravity-powered soapbox cars zoom down a gigantic four-metre-high ramp into the Old Market Square.
Students studying Level 2 Automotive at our Highfields campus have worked collaboratively with engineering staff and students to design and build their Base 51 joint entry from the ground up. The team repurposed parts from two bicycles - including the wheels, steering and braking system - while the engineering department designed and constructed a custom chassis made from steel to create a fully functional soapbox cart.
Our partnership with Base 51 aims to raise vital funds to support the charity’s work across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Donations will contribute directly to services that provide life-changing support for vulnerable young people, including mental health provision such as counselling, as well as youth clubs designed to reduce social isolation and improve wellbeing.
Alongside the action on the track, visitors can enjoy a range of entertainment, including opportunities to meet champion racer Sir Sidney Cartalot and the Robin Hood mascot.
Taking the wheel for Nottingham College and Base 51 is Automotive Lecturer, Victor ManasCliment. He said:
“This has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to get involved in a real, hands-on project and showcase their skills as part of a brilliant community event. We’re especially proud to have partnered with Base 51, helping to raise awareness of the vital support they provide for young people’s mental health.”
Verity Woods, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Base 51, added:
“We are so excited to be working with Nottingham College for the Nottingham Soapbox Race - an exciting new addition to the city’s events calendar. We can’t wait to see the car the students and staff have created. Both Nottingham College and Base 51 are dedicated to supporting young people across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and working together helps us create new opportunities, boost wellbeing, and build a better future for young people in our community.”
The event will also raise funds for its charity partner, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance.
