Find out how our staff and students have been celebrating VE Day, from sport fundraisers, researching local heroes and serving some British classics.

Basford Students Go the Extra Mile for Help for Heroes

Students at our Basford campus have been busy getting creative to raise money for 'Help for Heroes'. They've taken on everything from building and painting bird boxes to making a commemorative plaque.

They ran sponsored football and rounders tournaments to help boost donations, and over the next couple of weeks, they’ve planned three charity walks and will be packing bags at local supermarkets, all aiming to symbolically “bring a hero home”.

One of the most touching parts of the project has been the students' research into local fallen soldiers. They looked into who these heroes were, wrote up profiles about their lives and the conflicts they fought in, and even worked out the distances it would take to bring them home. These stories have been displayed on life-sized Tommy silhouettes, generously loaned by Ashfield Fire Station, with the help of ATTFE College, to help honour their memory.

All the money raised will be donated to Help for Heroes at the end of June — a real testament to the students’ hard work and creativity.

We spoke to Dean Williams, Help for Heroes Community Fundraising Manager. He said:

“I was truly impressed by the students’ dedication and hard work in raising both awareness and funds for Help for Heroes. Last year alone, the charity supported over 4,000 individuals, and the demand for our services continues to grow each year. That’s why it’s so important to engage young people in our mission - to help spread the word and ensure even more people know about the vital support we provide.”

Our refectories have been serving up a taste of history for VE Day

Across our campuses, our catering staff put on a special VE Day menu to celebrate. They served some British classics like Yorkshire pudding wraps, Victoria Sponge, cottage pie and scones.
