Our college has been recognised on the global stage after being named a winner at the prestigious International Green Gown Awards 2026, earning the title of Sustainability Institution of the Year (Small Organisation).

The college received the award in recognition of our ambitious and innovative approach to sustainability, placing environmental responsibility at the heart of our governance, curriculum, operations and community engagement.

The announcement follows our success at the UK and Ireland Green Gown Awards, where we were crowned Small Institution of the Year in 2025, securing our place in the international finals. The International Green Gown Awards winners were announced on 11 September 2026.

Established in 2014, the International Green Gown Awards celebrate outstanding sustainability initiatives from colleges, universities and other post-16 education providers worldwide. This year's winners represent organisations from 18 countries across six continents, showcasing leading practice in environmental and social sustainability within education.

Judges praised Nottingham College for our commitment to achieving net zero by 2030, our ambitious programme to remove fossil fuels from our estate, and the way sustainability has been embedded throughout teaching, learning and day-to-day operations. We were also recognised for our work to engage students, staff and the wider community in creating a more sustainable future.

Nottingham College's whole-college approach to sustainability has delivered significant results. Since 2020, we have reduced our carbon emissions by 45%, eliminated fossil fuel heating across 55% of our estate and secured £2.2 million in external funding to support the development of green skills and sustainable education. This investment has enabled the creation of 22 new qualifications designed to meet growing employer demand in sectors including retrofit, electric vehicles and renewable energy.

Andy Comyn, Deputy CEO and executive lead for sustainability at Nottingham College, said:

"We are incredibly proud to receive this international recognition. Winning Sustainability Institution of the Year reflects the commitment of our staff, students and partners, who work together every day to drive positive environmental and social change.

“This award recognises the progress we have made in embedding sustainability across every aspect of college life, from governance and operations to teaching, learning and community partnerships. While we're proud of how far we've come, we're even more excited about the role Nottingham College can play in supporting the transition to a greener, more sustainable future."

Being recognised as one of the world's leading sustainable education institutions marks a significant milestone for us as a college and demonstrates the impact of our long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Congratulations to everyone involved!
