Recently, students from our Media and Journalism courses had the exciting opportunity to interview the Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, about her remarkable career journey.
This insightful conversation was part of National Careers Week (NCW), an annual event, designed to help students explore various career paths and make well-informed decisions about their futures. Alongside the Mayor, our very own Chief Executive Officer and Principal, Janet Smith, also participated in the interview, offering students a wealth of experience to learn from.
The interviews, which were filmed, produced, and delivered entirely by our talented Media and Journalism students, took place in our custom-designed television studio. One of the students involved in the production, Mykyta Veselov, aged 18, is studying his second year of the Level 3 Journalism course and shared his thoughts on the experience:
“The experience was exciting, and I was really happy to have the opportunity to interview Mayor Claire Ward. When I started the course last year, I remember being absolutely shocked by all the opportunities you get here at Nottingham College. We have a podcast studio, TV studio, gallery, industry-standard cameras and microphones – basically everything you would ever need to become a professional journalist. I’m sure these kinds of experiences will increase my chances of getting a job within the media industry.”
Tiffiny Sibson, 16, Level 3 (Year 1) Journalism, had the role of Floor Manager, which involved leading the team behind the scenes and making sure everything ran smoothly. She said:
“Working behind the scenes means you need to make sure the gallery is functioning well, that the cameras are set up correctly, as well as the mics and sound. Working on an interview like this involves a lot of teamwork and I think the final piece turned out really well. After completing this course I’m hoping to study English at university and then I’d like to pursue a career as an author or within literature journalism. This course is very versatile, and it gives you so many different career options.”
