We are delighted to have appointed midlands-based construction company G F Tomlinson to deliver two new build projects at our Basford Campus.
This exciting new development will see our Basford site expand its Construction and Supported Learning offers with a new £5.4m Centre for Employment and Independent Living for Students with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CEIL for SLDD), as well as a new £5.4m Construction Skills Centre (CSC) that will expand our capacity to serve the construction industries growing need for new skilled workers.
In line with our commitment to sustainability and the ambitious goal of achieving carbon net zero by 2030, the two new builds are to be as energy efficient as possible and will go a long way to powering themselves, with over 60% of the electricity needed coming from their own solar panels. Cutting-edge low energy heat pumps and high spec insulation will mean the new buildings need much less energy to heat and any water wastage will be vastly reduced due to state of the art tap and plumbing solutions being implemented.
The CEIL for SLDD building will include delivering a two-storey new build with a gross internal floor area of 1,350m2, comprising 13 classrooms, teaching kitchen, dining area and ancillary spaces across its two levels, as well as associated external works.
And as campus that is regionally renowned for its construction training offer, the new Construction Skills Centre (CSC) building will be a welcome addition to the existing construction training facilities on site and help us meet the growing need to provide training for skilled construction trades in the city. Offering a flexible teaching and learning facility, the 1,500m² building will comprise a large double height construction trades workshop, as well as additional classrooms, a smaller modern construction workshop and associated staff and support facilities.
