What Sam Allison said
After completing my foundation course, I moved on to study a Business Studies top-up programme at Nottingham College. My time at the college was overwhelmingly positive. The support from staff was excellent, but one of the biggest benefits was the people I studied alongside. I built strong friendships with fellow students, many of whom I still keep in touch with today. While our careers have taken slightly different paths, many of them still work within hospitality and events-related industries. I can’t speak highly enough of my experience at Nottingham College. I genuinely enjoyed my time there, learned a huge amount and feel it has played a significant role in helping me get to where I am today.

More about Sam's journey at college
My name is Sam Allison, and I am the Head of Events and Partnerships UK at Rough Trade. I attended Nottingham College from 2011 to 2014.
"While at college, I studied a course focused on event management, with a particular emphasis on pubs, clubs and nightclubs. My interest in that area came from working in my local pub after turning 18. I started out doing the usual bar work but quickly progressed to Assistant Manager. Through that role, I developed a real interest in hospitality and wanted to learn more about the business and event strategies that sit behind the industry. The course was the perfect opportunity to explore those areas in greater depth and understand how events and hospitality work beyond the day-to-day operations of a pub."
"Many people know Rough Trade in Nottingham as the city’s iconic record shop. We have a retail space on the ground floor and an event venue upstairs, hosting live performances, artist signings and community-focused events. However, Rough Trade is much bigger than many people realise. We have multiple stores across the UK, including locations in London, Bristol, Liverpool and Nottingham, as well as international stores in Berlin and New York. My role focuses primarily on the UK side of the business, although I regularly work with colleagues in Germany and the United States on various projects and initiatives. There is a lot of responsibility involved, from managing teams to overseeing partnerships and event programmes, but it’s an incredibly exciting position."
"A major part of my role involves working with artists at all levels, from internationally recognised acts to emerging grassroots musicians who are just beginning their careers. I’ve always been passionate about music. Before joining Rough Trade, I was involved in local DIY music projects and grassroots events, so it has been amazing to see that passion develop into a career. Going from supporting local music scenes to working for an internationally recognised brand that plays a key role in artist development, live events and album campaigns has been hugely rewarding."
"On a daily basis, I work closely with record labels and artists. There is always something exciting happening, whether it’s hearing new albums ahead of release, speaking directly with artists or helping shape campaigns and events. Sometimes I still stop and think about how lucky I am. What I get to do every day is something many music fans dream about. One project we are particularly excited about is supporting grassroots artists in cities where Rough Trade operates. We are exploring a series of live shows designed to give emerging artists greater exposure and help strengthen local music scenes."
"Looking back, Nottingham College played a major role in helping me begin my professional journey. It provided me with many of the skills and tools that continue to be valuable in my work today. If I could offer advice to current students, it would be to make the most of your tutors. They have a huge amount of knowledge and experience, and they can often provide insights and industry connections that are incredibly valuable. I know the tutors who supported me helped shape my understanding of different industries and gave me guidance that I still benefit from today."
"I would also encourage students to believe in themselves and recognise their strengths. It can be difficult at times, but once you understand what you are good at, you should embrace it, develop it and be confident in showcasing those abilities. That mindset has been one of the key factors in helping me build my career and reach the position I am in today."
