Course introduction

Embark on a journey of creativity and self-expression with our brand new 6-year BA (Hons) Fashion degree, where we explore the art of 2D and 3D pattern development, garment creation and design.

This new BA (Honours) degree introduces the world of contemporary fashion, including design development, illustration, draping, textile techniques (including knit and print), pattern cutting and manufacturing; moving on to more advanced topics such as zero waste pattern cutting techniques. 

It also covers contemporary global fashion narratives, such as gender fluidity, diversity & inclusivity, sustainability, ethical practices as well as historical contexts. 

We're committed to helping you develop the mindset and abilities required for a successful career as a professional practitioner. Your studies will be enhanced by our wide industry network with talks by guest speakers, live projects and field trips amongst others. These links help to enhance your portfolio and offer a better insight into the standards expected by future employers. Collaborations with national and international organisations and events provide opportunities to engage in competitions and showcase your work on local and national industry platforms.

Level 5:

  • Commercial Practice - 60 credits
  • Professional Fashion Practice - 60 credits (includes Studio Practice and Work Placement elements)

Level 6:

  • Contemporary Fashion Practice - 60 credits
  • Final Major Project - 60 credits

The current timetable is as follows but this is subject to change:

  • Wednesday 09:00 – 10:30 and 13:15 – 16:30, Thursday 09:00 – 12:15 and 15:00 – 16:30 and Friday 13:00 – 16:30
  • Plus self directed study

Please note: Some classes may be delivered online.

The Fashion degree is based at the Adams Building, a converted Victorian lace factory; uniquely combining Nottingham's rich industrial heritage with up-to-the minute facilities. The department features industry-relevant digital technologies with Mac suites, 3D design software for pattern and manufacture and Adobe tools.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Fashion

You’ll need a minimum of 48 UCAS points from:

  • At least two A Levels at A2
  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Access to HE Diploma
  • T levels

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

GCSE English Language and Maths passes at Grades 9 to 4 (previously A* to C) are required. As an equivalent, we expect applicants to be working at (or to demonstrate their competency at) Level 2 or above in English/literacy and Maths/numeracy.

Mature applicants with relevant industrial or life experience - but without the standard educational requirements - are encouraged to apply.   Applicants will be considered based on their skills and experience and may be invited to an informal interview to assess their ability to successfully complete the course.

A wide range of innovative and traditional methods are used, including: practical workshops, discussions, groupwork, lectures, tutorials, project work, portfolios, essays, presentations, design journals/sketchbooks and visual assignments (such as photoshoots and catwalk events).

The global fashion industry offers a diverse array of opportunities. Typically, careers include positions in fashion design, buying, trend prediction, visual merchandising, garment production and technology and pattern cutting. Some graduates choose to take on freelance work, set up their own company or continue to postgraduate study. 

Specific graduate roles could include: fashion designer, illustrator, pattern cutter, buyer, garment technologist, visual merchandiser, trend forecaster, textile designer or fashion entrepreneur. Graduates could also consider a career in journalism, blogging, PR, marketing or education.

Additional costs

Your course fees cover your tuition and access to college facilities, including IT and library resources. You may need to budget for a few extras:

  • Personal device: A computer or personal electronic device is useful for self-study and assignments.
  • Textbooks: Recommended texts may be purchased new, second-hand, or as e-books. Many are also available in the library, along with online journals and study materials.
  • Printing/photocopying: Costs vary by student. We encourage using digital resources to reduce expenses and environmental impact.

To support your creative work and portfolio development, you should budget for the following approximate costs:

Tool Kits and Supplies:

  • Pattern cutting and manufacturing kit: around £75 (one-time)
  • Drawing and design tools: around £50 per year
  • Stationery: around £60 per year

Promotional Materials:

  • Student marketing pack: around £75
  • Professional portfolio production: around £125

Project Expenses (vary by year):

  • Year 1-2: around £150
  • Year 3-4: around £300
  • Year 5-6: around £400–£1000
