Course introduction

This course is perfect if you are employed in engineering and want to develop higher-level technical, analytical and professional skills.

The programme comprises 8 units, totalling 120 credits at Level 4 and combines core, specialist and optional study. 

All units are worth 15 credits.

  • Unit 4002 - Engineering Mathematics - applying mathematical methods to engineering problems
  • Unit 4003 - Engineering Science I - applying scientific principles to engineering systems
  • Unit 4019 - Electrical and Electronic Principles - mandatory specialist unit for this pathway
  • Two core units selected from the approved Pearson core-unit groups. These cover professional engineering practice, design, project or related core activity
  • Three approved Level 4 optional units. Pearson advises centres to consider Unit 4061 Programming for Engineers to support sector needs and progression

Throughout the course you will also develop technical communication, research, problem-solving, digital, teamwork, project-planning and independent-study skills.

The final optional-unit combination is subject to curriculum approval and must comply with Pearson rules of combination.

You can expect:

  • a practical and applied higher-education programme linked to contemporary electrical and electronic engineering
  • laboratory investigations, design activities, engineering calculations, projects, case studies, tutorials and problem-solving tasks

Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic)

A minimum of 48 UCAS tariff points from one or more relevant qualifications, normally including:

  • at least two A Levels at A2
  • a BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • an International Baccalaureate
  • an Access to Higher Education Diploma
  • a relevant T Level

Other combinations of qualifications and relevant engineering experience will be considered. 

Applicants should be working at, or be able to demonstrate competency at, Level 2 or above in English/literacy and mathematics/numeracy.

Mature applicants with relevant professional experience and/or qualifications are welcome to apply.

Assessment is primarily through coursework completed throughout the programme. Methods may include individual and group assignments, engineering calculations, practical activities, laboratory work, design tasks, project reports, technical reports, presentations and professional discussions.

Work is internally assessed and quality assured in accordance with Pearson requirements. 

Units and the overall qualification are graded using Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria, subject to Pearson grading rules.

Successful completion provides a recognised Level 4 higher-education qualification and supports progression to:

  • the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Engineering, including the Electrical and Electronic pathway
  • relevant degree or degree-apprenticeship study, subject to the receiving institution's entry requirements
  • technical and supervisory roles in electrical, electronic, control, automation, manufacturing, energy, maintenance, design, test, quality and project environments
  • professional development and increased responsibility for those already employed in engineering
