Course introduction

This course is perfect if you are employed in engineering and want to develop higher-level technical, analytical and professional skills or you aim to progress to a BEng (Hons) top-up degree, higher professional study or advanced technical and managerial employment.

This course is a Level 5 HND top-up, designed for students who have already passed (or expect to achieve) a compatible relevant HNC or equivalent Level 4 qualification whose unit structure permits progression onto the selected HND pathway.

Level 5 comprises the following units:

  • Unit 5002 - Professional Engineering Management - a mandatory Pearson-set theme unit
  • Unit 5006 - Further Engineering Mathematics
  • Unit 5011 - Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage
  • One project unit: either 5001 Research Project (30 credits) or 5041 Engineering Project (15 credits)
  • One mandatory specialist choice from:
    • 5010 - Further Electrical Machines and Drives
    • 5019 - Further Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles, or
    • 5021 - Further Control Systems Engineering
  • The required number of approved Level 5 optional units to reach 120 Level 5 credits

The final project route, specialist choice and optional-unit combination are subject to curriculum approval and Pearson rules of combination.

Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic)

For entry to a Level 5 top-up route, applicants must hold a compatible relevant HNC or equivalent Level 4 qualification whose unit structure permits progression onto the selected HND pathway. Compatibility must be checked before an offer is made.

Assessment is primarily through coursework completed throughout the programme. Methods may include individual and group assignments, research or engineering projects, laboratory work, practical investigations, engineering calculations, design tasks, technical reports, case studies, presentations and professional discussions.

Work is internally assessed and quality assured in accordance with Pearson requirements. Units and the overall qualification are graded using Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria, subject to Pearson grading rules.

Successful completion supports progression to:

  • a relevant Level 6 BEng (Hons) top-up degree at Nottingham College or another higher-education provider, subject to validation and entry requirements
  • advanced technical, design, research, test, maintenance, control, automation, energy, power, electronics, quality, project or engineering-management roles
  • degree apprenticeships, professional development and further specialist study
  • increased technical responsibility and career progression for students already working in engineering
