A Site Carpenter will normally work on a building site, or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and fixing building components, from the initial erection of a new building, through to the installation of all necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as a range of repair and maintenance activities.
The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Skilled Worker’ standard, which is widely accepted in the sector as a ‘licence to operate’ in a skilled construction trade.
The site carpentry pathway of this apprenticeship is delivered directly by us at our recently built Basford campus on a day release basis which is easily accessible by public transport and car. Using a combination of theory insight and practical sessions, apprentices learn and practice the practical mastery of the skills and techniques needed.
You will typically spend 24 months on-programme working towards the apprenticeship standard, with a minimum of 6 hours per week completing off-the-job training.
You will be assigned an assessor who will monitor your progress both in college and on site. You are required to keep a portfolio of evidence generated in the workplace. You will also be required to attend college on a day release to study the theoretical aspects of the apprenticeship and enhance your practical skills in preparation for the End Point Assessment (EPA).
Duration: 24 months plus the End Point Assessment

Site Carpentry - Level 2 Standard
You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job.
You will also need grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English Language and Maths – one of English Language or Maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C). Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above.
All applicants without proof of grades will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.
You will submit a portfolio of evidence to underpin the interview
The End Point Assessment consists of three distinct assessment methods:
- Knowledge test
- Practical test
- Interview underpinned by the portfolio of evidence.
You could progress to:
- A Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry or Architectural Joinery – allowing you to specialise further and work on more complex projects.
- Specialist qualifications such as heritage carpentry, timber framing, or furniture making.
- Team leader or supervisory roles in construction once you have experience, such as site supervisor or foreperson.
- Becoming self-employed as a subcontractor, running your own carpentry business.
- Further training in construction management or related fields, leading to roles such as project manager.
- Opportunities to work in specialist sectors such as set building for theatre/film, boat building, or bespoke joinery manufacturing.
