Apprenticeship introduction

The Improvement Practitioner Level 4 Apprenticeship develops skilled professionals who play a leading role in continuous improvement activity across an organisation. Improvement Practitioners are trained to analyse business processes, solve complex operational problems, and use data-driven approaches to support organisational performance. They work across teams and departments to deliver structured improvement projects that create measurable, sustainable results.

This apprenticeship is ideal for people who enjoy complex problem solving, analytical thinking, and leading positive change, and who want to make meaningful contributions to efficiency, quality, and service performance.

You will learn

1. Advanced Improvement Knowledge

You will gain a robust understanding of:

  • Continuous improvement methodologies, including Lean, Six Sigma, and structured problem solving frameworks
  • Data analysis techniques, statistical tools, and performance measurement
  • Process modelling, value stream mapping, and workflow optimisation
  • Risk analysis, project planning, and stakeholder management
  • How culture, behaviours, and change management influence successful improvement

2. Practical Improvement Skills

Through real-world projects and guided learning, you will learn to:

  • Lead improvement activities with cross functional teams
  • Analyse complex data sets to identify trends, root causes, and improvement opportunities
  • Design, test, and implement process improvements
  • Facilitate workshops, problem solving events, and structured reviews
  • Use tools such as DMAIC, SIPOC, FMEA, control charts, and hypothesis testing
  • Evaluate outcomes and sustain improvements through control plans and monitoring

3. Professional and Leadership Behaviours

Improvement Practitioners develop strong behaviours that enable them to influence and support others, including:

  • Confident communication and facilitation
  • Resilience and adaptability in dynamic environments
  • Analytical thinking and evidence-based decision making
  • Collaborative working to drive engagement and shared ownership
  • Professionalism, accountability, and a continuous improvement mindset

This programme builds on foundational knowledge (such as Improvement Technician Level 3) and is ideal if you are ready to take responsibility for guiding teams through structured improvement initiatives.

Apprenticeship information

Typical duration: 17 months including EPA

Improvement Practitioner – Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4)

  • You must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant role; however, we can support you in securing a suitable placement if needed.
  • Adults aged 19+ with relevant industry experience but lacking formal qualifications are encouraged to apply.
  • All applicants must complete an English and maths assessment before enrolling.
  • Grade 4’s or higher in English and maths or equivalent qualification.

You will need to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and behaviours, which is embedded into the Apprenticeship Standard, an assessor who will visit you on site and ensure that you are progressing towards the End Point Assessment will support you.

You must also complete an online or paper-based portfolio of evidence, which demonstrates how you have met each of the knowledge, skills and behaviour statements in the standard. The portfolio can be used to help inform the employer that you are fully prepared to commence the End-point assessment process.

The assessment methods must be delivered in the following order:

  • Project – You must pass the project before taking the professional discussion. The Project’s subject, title and scope is agreed at the gateway.
  • Professional Discussion
  • Observation

This Apprenticeship will include the knowledge, skills and behaviours typically required to achieve Technician status or the equivalent with the industry has recognised professional bodies. The final assessment process for this Apprenticeship will typically be representative of the review process required for professional registration

Upon achievement, you may wish to progress on to the Level 5 Operations Manager
