Apprenticeship introduction

The Improvement Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship equips you with the essential skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to support continuous improvement activities across an organisation. Improvement Technicians play a vital role in identifying operational issues, analysing data, improving processes, and helping teams work more efficiently.

This apprenticeship is ideal for people who enjoy problem solving, data analysis, and driving positive change, and who want to contribute to improved performance within departments or throughout a business.

You will learn

1. Core Improvement Knowledge

You will gain understanding of:

  • Continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma principles)
  • Process mapping, workflow analysis, and root cause analysis
  • Data collection, measurement techniques, and basic statistical tools
  • Problem solving models and structured improvement frameworks
  • Change management and the factors that influence successful implementation
  • Workplace operational standards, quality systems, and performance measures

 2. Practical Technical Skills

Through hands on experience and guided learning, you will learn to:

  • Gather, analyse, and present data to support decision making
  • Identify inefficiencies, waste, or bottlenecks in processes
  • Facilitate improvement activities such as workshops, process reviews, or team huddles
  • Use tools like fishbone diagrams, control charts, Pareto analysis, and 5 Whys
  • Apply structured problem solving to deliver measurable performance improvements
  • Support teams in implementing changes that enhance safety, quality, cost, or delivery

 3. Professional Behaviours

You will also develop the behaviours required for effectiveness in improvement roles, including:

  • A proactive, analytical mindset
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data handling
  • The ability to work collaboratively with cross functional teams
  • Ownership, accountability, and commitment to continuous improvement

Apprenticeship information

Typical duration: 17 months including EPA

Improvement Technician – Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3)

  • You must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant role; however, we can support you in securing a suitable placement if needed
  • Adults aged 19+ with relevant industry experience but lacking formal qualifications are encouraged to apply
  • All applicants must complete an English and maths assessment before enrolling

You will need to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and behaviours, which is embedded into the Apprenticeship Standard, an assessor who will visit you on site and ensure that you are progressing towards the End Point Assessment will support you.

You must also complete an online or paper-based portfolio of evidence, which demonstrates how you have met each of the knowledge, skills and behaviour statements in the standard. The portfolio can be used to help inform the employer that you are fully prepared to commence the End-point assessment process.

The assessment methods must be delivered in the following order:

  • Project – You must pass the project before taking the professional discussion. The Project’s subject, title and scope is agreed at the gateway.
  • Professional Discussion
  • Observation

This Apprenticeship will include the knowledge, skills and behaviours typically required to achieve Technician status or the equivalent with the industry has recognised professional bodies. The final assessment process for this Apprenticeship will typically be representative of the review process required for professional registration

Upon achievement, you may wish to progress on to the Level 4 Improvement Practitioner.
