Apprenticeship introduction

Engineering Manufacturing Technicians support the transformation of engineering designs into high-quality manufactured products. They operate across production, quality, process improvement, and new product introduction environments.

Core responsibilities:

  • Operating and monitoring production systems
  • Interpreting drawings and CAD data
  • Conducting quality inspection and testing
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives
  • Assisting with tooling and equipment setup
  • Data collection and technical reporting

Apprenticeship information

  • Typical duration: 36–42 months including EPA
  • Minimum 20% off-the-job training

The qualification typically includes:

  • Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering (pathway dependent)

Exact qualification depends on chosen pathway and current funding approval.

  • Level 3 Engineering qualification or relevant experience
  • GCSE Maths and English Grade 4 or above
  • Employed in a relevant manufacturing role

End Point Assessment (EPA)

The EPA is conducted by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation and typically includes:

  • Practical observation
  • Professional discussion
  • Review of portfolio evidence

Assessment components may vary slightly depending on the current assessment plan version.

  • Potential progression toward Incorporated Engineer status
