Course introduction
Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).
This course is perfect if you enjoy hand embroidery and would like to explore how to turn your creative skills into a small business or additional income opportunity. It is ideal for learners who want to develop their embroidery techniques while gaining practical knowledge of designing products, pricing handmade items, building a brand and promoting their work. Whether you are thinking about selling at craft fairs, creating an online shop, developing a creative side business or simply want to understand the process behind running a handmade enterprise, this course will provide the skills, confidence and support to help you take the next step.
During this course, you will learn how to develop your hand embroidery skills into a creative business idea. You will explore how to design and create professional-quality embroidered products, select suitable materials, improve finishing techniques and develop a collection of items that are attractive to customers. You will learn how to plan and develop your own creative brand, including choosing a business identity, creating packaging ideas and presenting your work professionally. You will gain an understanding of how to cost and price handmade products, calculate profit, research your target customers and make informed decisions about selling your work. You will also learn how to promote your embroidery business through photography, social media, marketing materials and craft fair opportunities. By the end of the course, you will have developed the creative, practical and enterprise skills needed to confidently showcase and sell your handmade embroidery.
On this course, you can expect a supportive and creative learning environment where you can develop your hand embroidery skills while exploring the exciting possibilities of starting your own small creative business. You will take part in practical workshops, demonstrations and hands-on projects designed to help you create a collection of professional-quality embroidered products. You are expected to bring your own fabrics and threads weekly where you will gain confidence in developing your own ideas, experimenting with designs and learning how to present your work ready for sale. Alongside the practical embroidery sessions, you will explore the essential business skills needed to turn your creativity into an enterprise, including branding, pricing, marketing, product photography and selling opportunities.
You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.
