Course introduction

The Domestic Gas Foundation Managed Learning Programme (DGF MLP) is a structured and industry-recognised pathway for individuals seeking to become qualified domestic gas engineers. Designed for new entrants to the gas industry, this programme combines theoretical learning with practical experience, ensuring candidates develop the core competencies required to progress toward ACS certification and a successful career in gas engineering.

You will learn:

  • Gas Safety Legislation
  • Gas Emergency Actions and Procedures
  • Characteristics of Combustion
  • Ventilation
  • Installation of Pipework and Fittings
  • Testing for Tightness, Checking and/ or Setting of Meter Regulators
  • Identification of Unsafe Situations
  • Emergency Notices and Warning Labels
  • The Operation and Positioning of Emergency Isolation Controls and Valves
  • Checking and Setting Appliance Burner Pressure and Gas Rates
  • The Operation and Checking of Appliance Gas Safety Devices and Controls. Chimney Standards
  • Chimney Flue Testing
  • Installation of Open
  • Balanced and Fan Assisted Chimney Configurations
  • Re-establishing Gas Supplies and Re-lighting Appliances
  • Gas Appliances Installation, Commissioning, Servicing and Fault Finding.

You can expect a minimum of duration 266 guided learning hours (6 months) off-site, attending 2 days per week at college. On site portfolio with Gas Safe Registered Engineer, minimum 675 guided learning hours (18 weeks). Each day will be no longer than 7.5 hours, a working week 37.5 hours.

Appliance competencies additional guided learning hours:

  • Central Heating Boilers and Controls (35 hours)
  • Water Heaters (7 hours)
  • Fires and Wall Heaters (7 hours)
  • Cookers (7 hours)
  • Ducted Air Heaters (7 hours)

Upon completion of all college based learning and assessment and on-site portfolio candidates are eligible to undertake ACS Gas Assessment.

Gas Foundation Certificate

You will need:

  • A recognised qualification in mechanical services engineering sector (eg. Plumbing), or
  • 2 GCSE’s at Grade 4/C or above, preferably in English and Mathematics.

Assessment is a combination of theory and practical assessment and an site portfolio.

ACS Gas Initial Assessment. Training and Assessment will have an additional cost.

Training materials are available. You are to ensure that you have work with a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.
