Nottingham College bids a heartfelt farewell to Carole Thorogood BEM, Chair of the Board of Governors, as she steps down after completing the maximum two terms of service - an impressive 18 years on the Board, including eight as Chair.

As Chair of one of the UK’s largest further education colleges, Carole has played a pivotal leadership role throughout her tenure. Her strategic vision and hands-on support have guided the college through three major mergers, culminating in the formation of Nottingham College in 2017.

In recognition of her meritorious service to education and the Nottingham community, Carole was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in 2024. Most recently, in early 2025, she presided over the official opening of two major new facilities: the Construction Skills Centre and the Gateway Centre for Students with Disabilities and/or Difficulties - both made possible through successful government funding bids and the college’s own investment strategy.

Carole’s professional background in law and human resources has brought invaluable expertise to the college. She spearheaded £30m of LEP investment into the college’s flagship City Hub campus in the heart of Nottingham city centre, and saw the college achieve its overall Ofsted ‘Good’ grade in 2022. She also led the college to its first ‘Outstanding’ grade, for its Apprenticeship residential provision, in 2024.

Reflecting on her time as Chair, Carole said:

“I have had the pleasure and good fortune to be part of the formation of one of the largest FE colleges in the UK - an institution that unlocks the potential of tens of thousands of students every year. Further education is a powerhouse of social mobility and economic prosperity for cities like Nottingham, delivering education and skills training to so many who go on to live, work, and thrive in our city. I’ve worked alongside many dedicated and talented staff who put students at the heart of everything they do. I wish the college every success as it continues to deliver on its high aspirations for Nottingham and its communities.”

Janet Smith, Principal and CEO of Nottingham College, added:

“It has been a genuine pleasure working with Carole. Her depth of knowledge, wealth of experience, and heartfelt commitment to education have made a lasting impact. She truly understands the vital role our college plays in the community and the wider economy. On behalf of everyone at the college, we extend our sincere thanks to Carole for her unwavering dedication and support.”
