The UK’s skills landscape is evolving at remarkable speed. Employers across the country continue to face difficulties hiring candidates who meet the demands of an increasingly digital, sustainability‑focused and hybrid working world.

AI literacy has now become the single hardest skill for employers to recruit, despite only 10% of organisations using AI to replace roles. This reflects a broader trend: the UK still relies heavily on human capability, but that capability must now include digital confidence and modern problem‑solving skills.

Meanwhile, government analysis of priority skills to 2030 shows that sectors such as digital technologies, construction, engineering and clean energy are expected to experience significant employment growth, further widening the gap between the skills employers need and the training many adults have previously accessed.

In Nottingham, adult learners balancing work, family commitments and personal ambitions are increasingly seeking training that aligns with these skill gaps without compromising their employment.

To support this, Nottingham College has identified five standout course areas that directly address the UK’s most in‑demand skills for 2026.

1. AI Literacy and Digital Versatility

As employers prioritise candidates who can work confidently with AI tools, adults are recognising the value of understanding how to use generative AI responsibly and effectively. Research shows that 2026’s most competitive workers combine traditional expertise with digital and AI‑powered capabilities, making this an essential skill for those in administration and management roles.

2. Sustainability and Green Operations

Businesses across the UK are under mounting pressure to meet Net Zero targets. This has created strong demand for employees who understand sustainability principles and energy‑efficient processes. The UK government forecast that green‑aligned roles will continue to expand rapidly through 2030, making this a crucial area for upskilling.

4. Hybrid Leadership and HR Management

Hybrid working has reshaped expectations of managers. Organisations are now looking for leaders who can communicate effectively, resolve conflict in digital spaces and nurture a strong team culture even when staff are distributed.

5. Retrofitting and Green Construction Basics

The construction and engineering industries remain among the UK’s most rapidly growing sectors, driven heavily by sustainability reforms. The government’s analysis predicts a major rise in demand for workers skilled in retrofitting, heat‑pump installation and energy‑efficient building solutions. Providing an especially relevant opportunity in Nottingham’s older housing landscape.

5. Digital Content Creation for Small Brands

The UK's thriving SME economy continues to attract adults looking to build or expand small businesses. Digital content skills; especially social media, video editing and basic SEO are consistently ranked among the most sought‑after marketing capabilities, making this a highly practical course option for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

With so many pathways available, choosing where to begin can feel overwhelming but the right skills investment can transform your career opportunities.
