With a long term ambition to join the police force, Faith has overcome the challenges she faced at school and is now thriving in her studies after choosing Nottingham College to support her journey towards her dream career.
Leaving school with grade 3s, Faith was told university wasn’t for her. Unsure of her next steps but with a passion for science, she refused to let those early setbacks define her.
Faith’s interest in science began at home. Growing up, she was inspired by her mum, who wanted to become a physicist. Together, they would watch classic crime dramas like Agatha Christie’s Poirot, sparking Faith’s fascination with investigation and crime scene evidence.
“When I discovered forensic science, I realised I could turn something I’d always loved into a career - and in a way, I was also carrying on my mum’s dream.
“I was always the person in school who was told I’d never end up with a degree. I just didn’t thrive in that environment.”
Faith joined Nottingham College on the Level 1 Applied Science course, while also working towards her maths and English qualifications alongside her course. With the support of her tutors and smaller class sizes, she was able to build her confidence and develop her skills step by step.
“The staff here really took the time to understand how I learn best. They supported me all the way through, and going from Level 1 to Level 3 felt incredible. I didn’t even think I’d make it that far.”
As part of her course, Faith has gained hands-on experience in the college’s specialist crime scene house - a mock environment designed to replicate real-world investigations.
“It’s such a unique experience. Being able to apply what you’ve learnt in a real-life setting, really builds your confidence. As someone who wants to go into the police force, understanding the procedures is so valuable.”
Faith’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Having been diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia, traditional learning environments didn’t always work for her.
“Here, you’re not just a number. The smaller classes mean you can ask questions and get the one-to-one support you need. If I’m struggling, I can talk to my lecturers and they genuinely care.”
After progressing successfully through Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, Faith took the next step and applied for the college’s degree-level Forensic Science course.
“When I found out I could study this at degree level, I jumped at the opportunity, I just thought - I’m going for it!”
Faith has clear ambitions for the future. She hopes to work in crime scene investigation or progress into a detective role, using her skills to support her community.
“I know it’s a competitive field, but having a degree gives me a real advantage. I want to help people - that’s what drives me.”
Faith’s journey is a powerful example of how the right support and determination can transform a student’s future - from uncertain beginnings to degree-level success.
