A group of our foundation learning students at our City Hub campus, had a fusion meal at our Fletcher’s restaurant, introducing them to a new environment, new foods and sharing each other’s cultures.

The idea started when their tutor, Susannah Porter, started asking the learners what they had for dinner while taking the register, to get them engaged and get a conversation started. From this conversation came a sharing of different cultures, with students from various backgrounds explaining traditional cultural dishes they eat for dinner.

Susannah then applied for a grant with the intentions of taking the learners t a restaurant, and chose our Fletcher’s restaurant as a safe, familiar environment.

The event was organised and ran by Rowan Gough, one of our NVQ Level 3 Supervision and Leadership in Hospitality students. As part of his course, he has to plan and run hospitality events. Rowan planned the event, set up tables, decorations and allergen awareness, he then liaised with Susannah about what she wanted and making it happen.

We spoke to Rowan about the experience and he said:

“I’ve really enjoyed being able to bring an experience to people. This event is for culture which I think is really important because the more people experience different cultures, the more understanding they are to them

The experience also helped me to be more structured and organised which hasn’t only helped me in college but in my personal life.”

The students were served jerk chicken, jollof rice, spring rolls, pakoras, bruschetta and macarons, all made by our catering and hospitality students.
