Two students from Adams Foundation Learning have been recognised as runners-up in the Young Inspiration category at this year’s prestigious Youth Power Awards.

Ellie Watson and Leah Day have spent the year working on a powerful social action project to raise awareness around hidden homelessness — an issue that affects thousands of vulnerable people but often goes unseen. According to YouGov, 62% of those experiencing homelessness are classified as ‘hidden’, meaning they may be sofa-surfing, living in temporary accommodation, or staying in unsafe conditions, without access to proper support.

Drawing from their own lived experiences, Ellie and Leah are using their voices to create change and bring attention to an issue that is too often overlooked.

As part of their campaign, the students will be publishing a report later this year, which includes interviews with two MP’s and a local councillor. The students would love to speak to other students who would be willing to share their stories, of course anonymously if they prefer.

In addition to their advocacy work, Ellie and Leah have collaborated with Youth Social Action Apprentice, Ellesia Hanna, to assemble care packages for students currently experiencing housing instability. These contain essential hygiene items and are available via Elessia or the Wellbeing Team.

Ellie was also recently interviewed by BBC Radio about her time at Nightstop Nottingham, an emergency accommodation service for people aged 16-25 delivered by a local charity, which has been ongoing throughout her studies and this project.

Their recognition at the Youth Power Awards is a testament to their commitment, courage, and compassion. We are incredibly proud of them and the impact they are making within our college and beyond.

Romel Davies, from Youth Power Awards, said: "Ellie and Leah turned their own personal hardship into powerful advocacy, leading a youth homelessness campaign that engaged college leaders and local MPs. Their project inspired peers, earned top marks, and led to real political action. Despite facing hidden homelessness themselves, they showed exceptional leadership, empathy, and drive. They are absolutely deserving of this award and recognition. I wish them all the best for the future."

If you’re supporting students who may be affected by these issues, please contact the Wellbeing Team for more information on how to access support or care packages.
