Apprentices at Nottingham College’s Engineering and Electrical Centre recently experienced a valuable hands-on learning experience where representatives from Foster Industrial and Fronius delivered a live demonstration of a Fronius pulse welding system.
The session, which took place on December 8, formed part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring learners can engage with the latest welding technologies used across industry, in a practical, safe and immersive environment.
Organised by Director of Foster Industrial Richard Foster, the demonstration was conducted by a machine leading expert from Fronius who guided students through the practical setup and use of pulse welding equipment. Richard explained the value of exposing apprentices to contemporary tools and methods:
“We’re here today to do some training on iron use welding equipment to show students how to set up a Pulse MIG Welder.”
He went on to highlight why learning pulse welding techniques is increasingly important for those entering the sector:
“The aim is to educate students on the advantages of Pulse MIG welding, these being less heat distortion, reduced welding fumes and a quicker clean up time.”
Foster Industrial has a long-standing relationship with Nottingham College, supporting skills development across multiple cohorts of welding and engineering students. Richard emphasised the importance of collaboration in tackling industry-wide workforce challenges:
We have been in partnership with Nottingham College for around 20 years now. Having previously worked with students at Highfields campus, we are working with the many apprentices here at the Engineering and Electrical Centre to help address skills shortages within the industry.

Hands-on demonstrations such as this not only enhance the technical skills of our apprentices but also allow them to connect directly with industry experts and employers. By working with partners like Foster Industrial, we continue to ensure our students graduate with the confidence, practical experience, and industry awareness they need to thrive in their future careers.
