This October, we’re celebrating Black History Month (BHM) under the theme ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’. This year’s theme invites us to reflect on the strength, resilience and pride that characterise the Black experience, and to recognise the importance of representation and leadership within our communities and organisations. We spoke to student president Collicia McCarthy to find out how her heritage inspires her in everything she does:
Tell me a little about yourself, where are you from?
My name is Collicia, I am an 18-year-old student currently studying at Nottingham College. Before moving to the UK in 2023, I was born and raised in Jamaica, a vibrant and lively country that thrives off its history. My hobbies include reading, creative writing, fitness and journaling.
What is your heritage?
My Jamaican heritage is something I am immensely proud of. Jamaica is a small island with a strong voice, known worldwide for its music, culture, cuisines, and sporting achievements. Our National Motto "Out of Many One People" is a powerful expression of identity, unity and multicultural harmony. It represents our complex history and the integration of many ethnic, cultural, and racial backgrounds into a single, cohesive national identity. Beyond the global influence, my heritage represents resilience, freedom, and creativity - qualities rooted in our history and carried forward through generations.
How does your heritage shape your identity?
Having been raised in Jamaica for most of my life, my heritage is a central part of who I am and what I believe in. It has taught me the importance of community, resilience, and pride, which I carry with me wherever I go. This is important to me because in everyday life I apply small aspects of my heritage whether it’s by valuing togetherness, having the confidence to stand tall in who I am, or the determination to keep moving forward even when faced with challenges. My heritage gives me both strength and perspective, grounding me while also motivating me to achieve more and work harder.
What are your thoughts on Black History Month and its significance?
Black History Month is undoubtedly an important celebration. It signifies the remembrance, respect and recognition that we have today for the contributions and struggles of Black people throughout history. It is also a reminder to Black youths and individuals to continue pushing forward with pride, strength, and ambition because we have earned everything we have today.
This year’s Black History Month theme is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’. What makes you proud of your heritage?
One thing that I am undoubtedly proud of is being Jamaican. Jamaica’s global influence despite being such a small country is one of the many causes of this. It reminds me that no matter how small you think you are, you still have the potential to make a huge impact. From our reggae music, dance, athletics and cultural traditions. Jamaica has continued to inspire and influence the world. This makes me stand firm in my own pride, knowing that my heritage represents resilience, strength, and creativity.
What do you enjoy about being a Student President?
As Student President, I enjoy being able to represent the voices of my peers and playing an active role in the positive changes within the college. The role allows me to not only support others but also build stronger connections and understanding with fellow students from different backgrounds. I enjoy creating opportunities that make student life more engaging, inclusive, and supportive, while also developing my own leadership and communication skills.
What do you study at Nottingham College and what do you enjoy about it?
I am currently studying an Access to HE Business at the Basford Campus. What I enjoy most about studying at Nottingham College is not only the level of passion, support and patience that the staff and tutors carry but also how engaging and welcoming the college atmosphere is. It is more than just a college; it is a community built on the foundation of support and excellence.
What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I hope to pursue a degree in chartered management. My ambition lies in leadership and teamwork. My goal is to make a positive difference in whichever field I go into and to always carry forward the lessons and pride of my heritage.
