GCSE Results Day can be a nerve-wracking experience for both students and parents. As the day approaches, it’s important to be prepared and supportive, no matter what the results may bring.

Here’s how you can help your child navigate this important milestone and what to do if results day doesn’t go to plan.

1. Stay calm and supportive

On results day, emotions can run high. Whether the results are better or worse than expected, staying calm and supportive is crucial. Celebrate achievements and reassure your child that there are always options available, no matter the outcome.

2. Discuss the results openly

Sit down with your child and go through their results together. Discuss how they feel about their grades and listen to their thoughts and concerns so you can tackle next steps together.

If your child has already applied to study with us and didn’t meet the entry requirements, don’t worry! It’s important they still attend their enrolment appointment so our admissions team can work with them to find a course that meets their needs and interests.

3. Explore the Options

If your child’s results aren’t what they hoped for, it’s important to explore all the available options. Here are some steps to consider:

Contact the School: Speak with teachers or the school’s career advisor to get professional advice on the next steps. They can provide guidance on re-sitting exams and remark requests.

Consider Further Education Colleges: Colleges like Nottingham College offer a wide range of courses and pathways that cater to different interests and academic levels. From vocational courses to A Levels and T Levels, there are many opportunities for your child to continue their education in a supportive environment and we still have places available for September 2024.

Apprenticeships and work-based Learning: Apprenticeships provide a blend of practical work experience and academic study. If your child prefers hands-on learning, this might be an ideal path and we have lots of vacancies available.

4. Look Into Re-Sit Options

If your child is close to passing but didn’t quite make the grade in key subjects like maths or English, consider re-sitting the exams. Nottingham College offers support for students needing to re-sit their GCSEs, providing additional tuition and resources to help them succeed. Many of our learners study for their re-sits alongside their chosen course too!

5. Encourage a Positive Mindset

GCSE results don’t define your child's future! Encourage them to stay positive and focus on their strengths and interests. Emphasise that there are multiple pathways to success, and this is just one step in their journey.

6. Plan for the Future

Once the initial emotions have settled, start planning. Research different courses and career options together. We offer the widest range of choice for school leavers in the region, including vocational courses, A Levels, T Levels, and apprenticeships, all designed to help students achieve their goals.

If you or your child are unsure which course to apply for don’t worry! Our Careers Advisors will be available all throughout enrolment to discuss course options and availability at college.
