Yesterday the government announced that some regulations around the production and sale of electric vehicles will be relaxed, to support car manufacturers affected by the US's 25% tariff on imported cars.

In response, Lindsey Smith, Assistant Principal of Nottingham College said:

“These changes make it even more important to upskill our colleagues within the automotive sector, and support them to understand and navigate these new regulations effectively.

“With the UK's commitment to banning new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, it's crucial for us to provide comprehensive training on electric vehicle (EV) technology. This includes everything from EV manufacturing to maintenance and repair, ensuring our trainees and Apprentices are well-prepared for the future. We will continue to play a key role in upskilling the current workforce and training new entrants to meet the growing demand for EV expertise.

“Given the extension of hybrid vehicle sales until 2035, we will continue to offer specialised training on hybrid technology. This will ensure that our trainees are equipped to handle both hybrid and fully electric vehicles.”

Emtec, part of Nottingham College, has seen strong growth in the automotive sector and continues to support the need for significant investment in this area through:

  • Industry upskilling of individuals, particularly the transition from being mechanically minded to electrically
  • Support for smaller independent garages who may not have the buying power to develop their expertise in EV
  • Creating opportunities for Apprentices and new entrants to the industry through industry leading training and programmes which embrace the new technology
  • Advising on incentives to individuals - maintenance costs are higher, tyres replaced more frequently due to weight and acceleration
